Epilogue
Krystal stayed on their usual path, knowing her men preferred her to do so. Even two weeks after Denny’s death and her transition, they still hovered around her, worried that something else might happen to her. She didn’t mind. It was nice to have them worry about her.
She loved being a werewolf. After the first awful two days of having her body go through the transformation, she’d come out of the darkness to find that she was stronger, happier than she’d ever been before.
The sun had set an hour earlier, but the moon put out a fair amount of light. She turned another corner and headed toward the Summerton’s home. If she was lucky, she’d see Evie playing outside with her younger brother.
The air whipped through her fur as her tongue lolled out of her mouth. The padded steps of the men set up a rhythm behind her. They’d let her lead until they were ready to go home. Then two of them would bound ahead of her and take charge with the third bringing up the rear, once more watching over her.
One of these days I’ll have to tell Stella and Arizona.
She felt a little guilty not telling her friends, but the men had warned her to be careful about telling others, even those in Fate, that she’d been changed. A wolfish smile came.
I’ll have to tell them soon. They’re going to find out anyway once I start showing.
Becoming a werewolf wasn’t the only thing she couldn’t tell her friends. She’d never tell them about Denny’s death. The pack had agreed to keep his death a secret. Although most the people in Fate were shifters and understood that the pack lived by its own set of rules, there were a few, humans mostly, who would insist that her men answer to the Law of Man. It was better to not risk letting anyone know. Even Evie knew enough to keep quiet, with constant reminders from her grateful parents.
Evie.
She slowed her pace and came to a stop in front of the girl’s home. Evie sat with her parents and little brother on the porch, each of them eating an ice cream cone. Krystal wagged her tail, catching the girl’s attention.
“Look! It’s Miss Krystal!”
Evie’s mother waved as her father stood up and motioned for them to come over. “Krystal, boys, we’d be real happy if you’d join us for some dessert.”
She was tempted, but she knew the men would prefer to get home. They were eager to get her back into bed.
Wagging her tail again, she shook her head back and forth, then spun around and darted into the trees.
Dane and Eric raced ahead of her, leaving Curt to trail behind them. They growled as they passed her, telling her to hurry.
I am.
To prove it, she bounded ahead of them and heard them groan their surprise. Getting a good run tonight was important. From what she’d learned from the females of the pack, she wouldn’t be able to risk shifting again when she was farther along in her pregnancy. Even if she wanted to, she doubted the men would allow it.
She pressed on, running harder, faster. Making it home before they did, she shifted quickly and turned to face them. They bounded toward her, ready to shift before pouncing on her and taking her again.
“Stop.” She held up her palm and smiled.
They tilted their heads, questioning in their silent wolf manner.
“You can’t take me like you usually do. You’re going to have to be less rough for the next few months.”
They tilted their heads the other way, still not understanding.
She chuckled and moved her palm to her stomach. “You wouldn’t want to hurt the baby, would you?” She laughed again, louder, as they hurriedly shifted. Opening her arms to them, she said, “Come on, boys. Take your mate to bed.”
