Chapter One
Six months earlier
Officer Georgia Fox switched on the patrol car lights and hit the siren. Pulling over a driver on the cold winter night was the last thing she wanted to do, but after three years with the Atlanta Police Department, she knew that even the smallest things could make a difference in not only her safety but that of others.
The Mercedes’s right turn signal flashed as the driver pulled off the road onto the side of the highway. She could see the silhouettes of two men in the front seat, but couldn’t make out any details. After calling in her location and status, she opened her car door and got out. Her partner, Mack Horton, remained in the patrol cruiser and ran the license plate number through the computer system.
She approached the vehicle carefully, her palm over her holstered gun. Although she doubted anything bad would happen, her training had taught her that it was better to be prepared than sorry. The driver put down his window, his hair blowing at the blast of wintery air.
“What seems to be the problem, officer?”
Georgia scanned the handsome man behind the wheel and checked for any signs of inebriation or other trouble. A second perusal, however, was all for her benefit. Rarely did she see a man that could take her breath away, but he was one of those. He had tanned skin with dark blond hair that caressed the lobes of his ears. Although he wore a coat, she could tell he was all muscles beneath the worn-to-perfection leather. Judging from his height, even while sitting, she guessed he was several inches over six feet tall. The laugh lines around his green eyes crinkled with his wide smile. Better yet, it was a smile that held no malice.
She felt her body stiffen with an unfamiliar sensation. Heat hit her even though she wore her heavy policeman jacket and was used to the cold December weather. In fact, if the heat got any stronger, she’d have to start stripping off a layer of clothing. That would be hard to explain to the captain on her shift.
“May I see your identification and registration, sir?” She bent a little lower and got a good look at the passenger. He was just as yummy as the driver. His hair was darker, but he had the same chiseled chin, the same piercing light green eyes. If she had to make a guess, she’d say they were related, possibly brothers. Finding not one, but two hot men during a routine pull over was unusual. Not that she’d do anything about it, but it made her shift a little more interesting. Interesting in a good way, which beat the hell out of interesting in a bad way.
A quick check of the interior of the vehicle found nothing out of the ordinary. She took a moment as she always did to check her gut. Listening to her instincts had saved her more than once. She suspected that they weren’t hiding anything.
“Here you go, officer. Could you tell me why you pulled me over?”

; His voice was like smooth whiskey in front of a roaring fire. It went down like silk, but if a person didn’t watch it, it could pack quite a punch. She gave him another once-over, quickly imagining him leaning over her while she stretched out on a luxurious fur rug.
She mentally brushed the enticing image away and took his information. A glance had her noting that she’d guessed correctly. Paul Casing was six feet, three inches tall. His license said he hailed from a town in Texas called Pleasure. It was an odd name for a town, but a memorable one.
“Mr. Casing, one of your brake lights is out.”
“Is it?”
Damn, that voice could make a woman drool. It was more like a fine wine than whiskey. It was intoxicating, making her want to lean over with her lips parted, ready for a kiss. Ready for anything.
Irritation flooded her. When had she ever felt that way? Especially while on duty?
She frowned as she jerked her mind back to the conversation. She’d almost forgotten what they were talking about.
“I didn’t realize. Thanks for telling me. I’ll tell the rental company about it tomorrow.”
She looked again at his paperwork, intent on keeping her mind on her duty. The car wasn’t registered in his name. If it wasn’t a rental, maybe stolen, then Mack would let her know. Her instinct told her that he wasn’t the car thief type.
“Are you in town for business or pleasure, Mr. Casing?” Somehow the title of mister didn’t fit. She wasn’t sure why, but he deserved a loftier title, one that would command obedience. Yet she had no clue what that title would be.
The moment she looked up and their gazes met, she was sure he’d say he was there for pleasure. Pure, unadulterated, steamy and sultry pleasure. Something about Paul and his friend reeked of pleasure of a very sinful kind.
“Business.” He took her in, giving her a good once-over. “Unless you’ve got other ideas.”
There it was. He might be in town for business, but he was ready for fun.
“Damn, man, are you trying to get us hauled in? We’re supposed to leave tomorrow.” His friend or brother, or whatever he was, leaned across the seat and gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m Destin Casing and I’m sorry about that. Sometimes Paul doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut.”
She’d had her fair share of propositions from civilians, some sincere and others trying to charm their way out of a ticket. But she’d never taken any of them up on their offer. Not only was it not professional, it was downright dangerous in her line of work. Besides, for the past six months since that awful day that had changed the way she viewed life, she hadn’t felt a twinge of desire for any man.
Until now.
Is that what that sensation is? Am I turned on?
She handed back his paperwork. “See that you let the company know about the taillight. I know it’s not a big thing, but having a brake light out can cause problems, especially if we get snow or if you’re taking a long trip on the highways.”
The touch of his fingers on hers jolted her. It was a lightning bolt to her hand. His eyes narrowed as his smile widened. She straightened up, not knowing what to think.
It’s been a while, but not that long. Or has it?
The sensation, however, was gone the instant their fingers no longer touched. She was about to ask if he’d felt it when she decided it was better left alone. Instead, she glanced at Mack, who shot her the thumbs-up, indicating that the car’s plates had come up clean.
She nodded her head at Destin, then at the equally hot Paul. Two amazingly attractive men from one family. “Okay, then, I’ll let you go with a warning. If you’re staying longer, you should take the car back and switch it out for a new one. Drive safely.”
“Hey, Officer…” He let his question fade off.
“Officer Georgia Fox.” Her name was on her nameplate that was fixed to the front of her jacket. Maybe he hadn’t noticed. Or maybe he just wanted to talk more. As cold as it was standing beside their car, she wouldn’t have minded shooting the breeze a little while longer. Truth of it was that she wouldn’t have minded doing more than that. Again, she chastised herself for thinking unprofessional thoughts.
She glanced back at Mack and could tell he was on the verge of getting out of the car to see what was taking so long. He was a veteran officer, nearing retirement. The overhead lights of the cruiser shone on his bald head. He had good intuition and wouldn’t wait long before making sure she was all right. She shook her head at him, letting him know nothing was wrong. Still, it was good to know that Mack had her back.
Paul edged out the window far enough for the breeze to catch his hair and ruffle it. She had to resist the urge to do the same with her fingers.
“How about joining us for a drink later? We’re staying at the Wilmont Hotel downtown. Do you know the place?”
“I do.”
At least it was a sincere offer. The issue of whether or not he was getting a ticket was gone so it couldn’t mean he was trying to influence her. But it would still be unprofessional to take him up on the offer. Not to mention the fact that they were leaving town tomorrow, so what was the point? She wasn’t the type for one-night stands.
“Then you’ll meet us later. Say around nine?”
“I don’t think that would be a good idea, sir. Like I said before, be careful and have a safe trip home. Good night.” She caught the disappointment on his face before she pivoted on her heel and strode away from the car.
She paused, once again resisting the compulsion to take him up on his offer, then kept walking. Listening to the sound of his car pulling back onto the road gave her a sense of loss.
“That’s stupid.” She slid back behind the wheel of the patrol car and into the welcoming blast from the car’s heater.
“What’s stupid?” Mack’s voice had taken on a harsh, gravelly sound to it lately. Either it was an effect of growing older or smoking. She hoped it wasn’t anything worse.
“Nothing.”
“No problems then?”
“Nope. Just a couple of guys in town for business. They’re headed home tomorrow.”
“You sure talked to them a while. Are you sure there wasn’t anything else?”
Why Mack would ask was beyond her. Had he sensed her attraction to them all the way from the squad car? But that was ridiculous. He was just doing his part as her partner. If there’d been a problem, she would’ve stepped away from their car, then signaled to him to join her.
“You sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine.” She shot him a scowl, then wished she hadn’t. He only had her best interest at heart. Mack was a solid partner and an even better friend.
“Okay, okay. Just checking is all. No need to bite my head off.”
“Sorry.”
She closed her eyes and fought to keep from snapping at him again. Ever since that day six months earlier when she’d answered an urgent call from dispatch, then had walked in on the horror in that modest suburban home, her fellow officers had treated her differently. As though they thought less of her. Worse, as though they were afraid she might break in half. She’d never felt completely accepted into the man’s world of police work, but the way they acted around her now made her feel even more like an outsider.
The problem was that she wasn’t so sure they weren’t right. Some days she did feel like breaking.
She’d hoped Mack wouldn’t treat her the same way, but she couldn’t blame him. If the situation were reversed, she’d tiptoe around him.
Yet how did they expect her to react? She’d walked in on a multiple murder scene, a brutal slaying of two parents and their two children, ages twelve and eight. The father had put up a desperate fight, but he hadn’t had a chance against the knife the killer had used. The sight of their mutilated bodies had sent her stumbling out the rear of the house and upchucking in the yard.
When she’d finally stopped vomiting, she’d lifted her head and found herself staring at a man standing in the line of trees at the back. His upp
er body was shielded in the shadows of the night, hiding his face. But she’d never forget the jagged red line of blood that ran along his arm from his elbow to his hand. It had covered much of the strange tattoo covering his forearm, but she’d seen enough. The tattoo of a black snake with a white cross in the middle of its flat head wasn’t easy to forget. All at once, she’d known he was the murderer. She’d tried, but she’d been too shaken to give much of a chase. He’d gotten away, disappearing into the night.
Although she’d known it wouldn’t help, she’d spent hours poring over mug shots. Checking databases looking for a snake tattoo covering the right arm hadn’t given her any leads, either. When no other similar murders followed, many of her fellow officers had assumed that the killer had left town. They seemed almost thankful not to pursue the case any longer.
“You okay, Fox?”
“Damn it, Mack, stop bugging me.”
She bit down on her lower lip, asked Mack to call in their status, then she eased the car back onto the road. One of these days, she’d stop seeing that terrible bloody scene in her head. At least, that was what she kept praying would happen. For now, all she could do was try and keep her mind blank, devoid of the many haunting memories that plagued her.

Destin Casing motioned to the bartender to give them another round. He and his brother Paul liked the hotel bar. Unlike most, it had a decent band and a steady crowd of customers. The rich mahogany walls gave the room a cozy ambience that hinted of past generations where men smoked cigars and argued politics. A deep red color accented the walls and lined the barstools and leather booths. It was a man’s kind of bar which, of course, meant it drew in a lot of women. Women who liked men of power and wealth. Women who were looking for more than a fun time and even a few who were happy to get paid for their company.
