  Chapter One

  “I’m calling bullshit on both of you.” Maya Switt gaped at them. They had to be joking. She could see Shay Mathews pranking her about this, but Tatum Griffin wasn’t the type to play jokes.

  Shay crossed her heart. “I swear it’s the truth. In fact, there they are.”

  Maya gazed out the window of Tony’s Diner in Passion, Colorado, at the seven hot-enough-to-melt-edible-panties men standing on the street corner. Three of them belonged with Shay and another three were the men Tatum lived with. The seventh, just as delectable as the rest, was the one who’d really grabbed her attention. But who was he?

  She’d lived in Passion as a child then had moved to New York City with her parents to help them open a small clothing store. But her parents had hated the Big Apple, and after a financially disastrous year, they’d hurried back to the small Colorado town with the eclectic mix of citizens ranging from street peddlers to billionaires. Maya had stayed on in the big city to try to make it as a jewelry designer. But after struggling to achieve any recognition, she’d come to the conclusion that, although she wasn’t ready to give up on her dream, she no longer thought NYC was the place to make her mark. Not to mention the fact that, for her at least, meeting the type of wild man she yearned for was next to impossible there. Men in the city had a lot of fine qualities, but none of them possessed the animal magnetism that could make her heart pound.

  She’d kept in touch with friends like Tatum and Shay and had called them as soon as she’d arrived back in Passion. She was thankful that she’d managed to get together with them before Shay planned to return to her new home in the Montana mountains.

  “Okay, so I’ve met Tatum’s guys, the Shelton brothers, but who’s the other hunk? Please tell me he’s not aiming to make a fourth for either of you.” Maya plopped back against the booth. “Three men for one woman is just not fair. I mean, come on. I’ve spent the past two years in New York City and haven’t found even one good man. All the men I’ve met are too civilized. I want a man’s man. Someone who has a wild side I can tame. Do you know the type of man I’m talking about?”

  Shay smothered a laugh as Tatum widened her eyes at her. “Yeah, we know the type.”

  “So tell me. Who’s the other guy?”

  She dropped her gaze to her two hamburgers and the mound of fries on her plate when he turned and looked in their direction. As a rule, she tried to act assertive, especially around men who thought her petite, lean body and the curly blonde hair framing her cherubic face meant she was anything but intelligent or independent. She sometimes overcompensated for her insecurity about her lack of curves and her embarrassingly flat chest by being outspoken and gregarious. She’d developed a habit of thrusting out her chin and her less-than-spectacular chest.

  Why was she suddenly shy? Especially without even meeting him. He could be a Grade A jerk, so why let one little look intimidate her? She forced her gaze up only to find his focus back on the other men.

  Damn.

  “That’s a friend of Rosh’s, James W. Hunter. And no, I have no plans to make him my fourth.”

  Tatum shook her head and took another bite of her cheeseburger. “Uh-uh. Me, either. Three’s enough.”

  “Good. So what’s his story? What’s he do?” She didn’t care if he made a lot of money. Growing up in a middle-class family had taught he
r how to make a dollar stretch. But his profession would give her a glimpse into his personality. Was he a lawyer, a man who liked using his mind instead of his hands, and if so, which kind? Or if he was a construction worker, that showed that he enjoyed using his hands. She took in his hard body. Even his denim shirt couldn’t hide his muscles.

  I wouldn’t mind him using his hands on me.

  Shay took her time in answering, as though trying to determine what to say.

  Aw, crap. Please don’t tell me there’s something wrong with him. She let out a frustrated breath. Wouldn’t it be just my luck to meet the kind of man who could make me beg for sex and find out he has a sordid past? Or that he’s already hooked up?

  “Uh, I’m not sure. But I do know that his two brothers are as hot as he is. Why don’t I introduce you and you can find out all about him for yourself?”

  Maya didn’t hesitate. “Yeah. Definitely. But let me freshen up first.”

  She bumped against Tatum’s shoulder, who slid out of the booth to let her out. Giving James another once-over, Maya hurried toward the ladies’ room at the back of the restaurant.

  Pushing through the door of the restroom, she flung her purse onto the counter then leaned forward to check her makeup.

  Eyeliner? Check.

  Mascara? Check.

  Lip gloss? Check.

  She considered reapplying more foundation then nixed the idea. The man who would want her wouldn’t care if she wore makeup or not. Instead, he’d see past her shortcomings and recognize her for the beautiful, sexy woman she was.

  She thrust out her “girls,” or at least what there was of them, and frowned. “Beautiful and sexy, my ass. Mother Nature, that was not a funny joke.”

  Her friends told her she was perfect the way she was, but she’d trade her incredibly fast metabolism, the same metabolism that allowed her to eat anything and everything she wanted without gaining an ounce, for a couple of C cups any day. She used her arms to squeeze her boobs together and thought for the hundredth time about buying a push-up bra or even a padded one. She turned her breasts loose and was disappointed in the lack of any major jiggle.

  “Okay, James Hunter, what you see is what you get. If you don’t like it, then it’s your loss.”

  Snatching her purse, she headed back to her friends. Shay was outside talking with the men while Tatum was still finishing her burger. She slid onto the seat next to her friend. “What’s up? She’s not giving him some sob story like ‘come and meet my poor sex-starved friend,’ is she?”

  Tatum laughed then wiped her mouth. “Of course not. She’s asking them to join us, that’s all. Have you met Shay’s guys yet?”

  “No.”

  “The two who look alike are Rosh and Renkon McClain. The other one, the Hispanic-looking one, is their friend, Walker Ramirez. I’m sure they’ll get around to meeting you soon enough.”

  “Like now? I guess we should move a couple of tables together, right? We’re not all going to fit into the booth.”

  “Um, maybe.” Tatum twisted and faced Maya. “Listen, try to take Jamie with an open mind, okay?”

  “Jamie? Instead of James? Jamie sounds like a kid’s name. Or a girl’s.” She waved her hands in the air. Talking with her hands was a habit she’d tried to break but couldn’t. “Never mind me. Whatever he’s called is fine. As long as there’s nothing wrong with him. There isn’t, is there?”

  “Of course not.” Tatum darted her gaze back to study the men. Or was the opposite true? Was she instead trying to avoid her?

  She put her hand on her friend’s arm. “Then why did you turn away when I asked you? What’s up? What do you know that you’re not telling me?”

  Tatum shook her head a little too aggressively and still couldn’t make direct eye contact. “Nothing. He’s a great guy. I mean, I don’t know him well, but if Shay’s men vouch for him, then he’s got to be good. Plus, he has a reputation of being somewhat of a wild man. That’s what you said you wanted, right?”

  She pivoted toward the window and searched for the men that were now nowhere in sight. “He sounds a little too perfect, if you ask me.”

  “No one’s perfect. Not even me.”

  Holy crap. He heard me. When will I learn to watch what I say?

  She plastered on a calm expression, then eased back against the cushion of the booth and turned her head to find James, aka Jamie, Hunter smiling at her. She could hardly deny what had been said since it was obvious that he’d overheard her. Instead, she decided to roll with whatever punches came along. What other choice did she have?

  “From the way Shay and Tatum talk, you sound pretty damn close.” What was it people said? A good offense is better than a good defense? Or something like that.

  She didn’t bother offering him her hand. In fact, she was almost afraid to. He was so damn overwhelming with his rugged good looks and his body as hard as a Mack truck. “Hi. I’m Maya Switt.”

  “Jamie Hunter. Didn’t anyone ever tell you the old saying?”

  Had he read her thoughts about a good offense?

  “I think it goes, ‘Don’t believe everything you hear and only half of what you read.’” He kept his smile even as his dark eyes gleamed.

  But were they sparkling out of interest or something else? She swallowed, suddenly nervous.

  Damn it. He’s just a guy. Nothing more.

  She thrust out her chest as she often did when trying to act more in control than she felt. “Actually, I have, and yeah, I should know better.”

  Rosh had his arm around Shay and lingered by the door with her other two men, Renkon and Walker. Marc Shelton and his brothers, Adam and Hank, joined Jamie by the table and motioned for Tatum to get out of the booth, so Maya slid out, too. The four large men made it difficult to do that gracefully, but she managed to sidestep them, brushing past Jamie’s formidable hulk.

  As though the man personified heat, warmth wafted off him, striking her in the core of her abdomen. Rolls of lust washed through her, stunning her into pausing briefly to take a deep breath. Like stabs of passion, his presence undid her, making her feel wobbly.

  What the hell?

  She must’ve wavered on her feet, because he took her arm as if to steady her. Another blast of heat swept through her, and, for a moment, she considered throwing herself on top of the table and spreading her legs.

  Oh, wow.

  She yanked her arm away from his and gaped at him. His dark eyes had lightened with flecks of amber. Or had his touch affected her eyesight, too?

  “Are you okay?”

  Even his voice made her shiver with need. But she’d be damned if she’d let him know it. She cleared her throat before answering. “Sure. Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?”

  He centered his focus on her eyes. Shit. He knows.

  “You seemed a little…unbalanced for a second.”

  “Unbalanced as in unsteady?”

  His smile widened. What a wonderful smile you have, Mr. Hunter.

  “Right. What else would I mean? Unbalanced as in crazy?”

  She threw back her shoulders and decided the current discussion was going off the tracks. “No. Don’t be silly. What I meant was—”

  “Hi, everyone. Why don’t you guys help me pull a couple of tables together so you can all sit down?”

  Thank goodness for Loren.

  Everyone turned to face the fiery waitress that was also a friend of the girls. She’d worked at Tony’s for several years and knew almost everyone in Passion. As usual her black hair was spiked and her waitress uniform accessorized with plenty of colorful jewelry. Loren swept her gaze over Jamie, the heavy, dark eyeliner making her eyes appear even darker as she lifted her eyebrows and waited for an answer.

  “No thanks. We’ve got to get on our way.” Marc put a hand on Tatum’s shoulder. “Right, baby?”

  Tatum glanced at Shay then back at her. “Yeah, we do. Um, Shay and I promised the guys we’d, um, help them with some chores today.”

  “Oh.
Why didn’t you say so? I’d be happy to help out. You know. Anything to get me out of my dingy little apartment for a while.”

  “Wow, that’s really nice of you to offer, but we’ve got it covered.” Adam Shelton patted Jamie on the back. “Jamie will stick around and keep you company. Won’t you, man?”

  “Sure. No problem.”

  Again, his amazing eyes landed on her and made her want to jump his bones. She gritted her teeth and forced a stupid grin on her face to keep her libido from overriding her common sense. “Oh, that’s okay. I wouldn’t want to bother you.”

  “Too late.”

  “I’m sorry?”

  “I said it’s too late. You already bother me.”

  Ouch. Her heart hit her stomach. She’d had her fair share of rebukes in her life, but none of them had ever knocked her for a loop like his had. She reached for her purse. “Oh. O–kay. Then I guess I’ll be going.”

  His hand was on her arm again. The heat she’d felt before amplified, searing into her skin. “I meant that you bother me in a good way.” He eased her back into the booth. “A really good way.”

  “See you later, Maya,” called Tatum.

  She hadn’t even noticed Tatum and the men moving away until it was too late. By then, they were halfway across the room toward the front door.

  Loren chuckled then whipped open her order pad. “I’ve seen better setups before, but ya gotta give them credit. It wasn’t slick, but it worked.” She pulled the pencil from behind her ear and shifted her weight onto one foot in perfect waitress tradition. “What can I get you?”

  Maya pushed her empty plate toward the edge of the table. “Nothing for me. I won’t be staying much longer.”
