  Chapter One

  Brandon Banning allowed the young woman to push him against the wall of the bar. He arched an eyebrow as if to say “really?” but didn’t try to break free. She acted tough, but he doubted she’d ever done anything rougher than throwing insults as the mean girl in high school.

  The different lights set up around the interior of Saddles, a popular cowboy bar, reflected a multitude of colors over her face, but even in the dim lighting near the walls, he could tell she’d caked the makeup onto her face and eyes. The only thing the makeup did was make her look older than her less-than-twenty-one years. She couldn’t be more than nineteen, if that.

  Why did human women use all that crap to try to make themselves more appealing? He preferred his women without makeup, much less hair extensions, fake nails, and all the other “additions” women used.

  The young woman, typical of the girls frequenting Saddles, pressed her barely clothed body next to his and widened her cowgirl-booted stance then tossed her over-processed blonde hair in a sexy come-and-get-me gesture.

  “If I unzipped your fly, would I be disappointed or impressed, cowboy?”

  Brandon slid his gaze lower, noted the surgically enhanced breasts squeezed into the tight rhinestone shirt she wore, then moved on to the flat stomach sporting a belly button with a horseshoe-shaped piercing. “Depends on what you’re used to, girl. I’m sure there might be men who are bigger than me, but I’ve never had any complaints.”

  He couldn’t know for certain, but he’d guess she’d come from Denver, ready to party down with the local cowboys. City slickers liked to pretend to be the real thing, but he didn’t mind. As long as he could find a good horse to ride during the day and get ridden by a sexy filly at night once in a while then he’d keep his job as a bouncer. Either she’d come to cowboy it up, or she believed the rumors about werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural beings living in the small, artsy town of Passion, Colorado, and had decided to take a run on the wild side.

  If she only knew what wild really is, she’d probably wet her panties and scream all the way home.

  He and his brothers had left their pack in the small shifter community of Forever, Texas, and had planned on taking an indirect route to Oregon, where they’d hoped to start a pack of their own. When they’d passed through Passion, they’d realized the town was perfect for them. Passion was large enough to have numerous things to do, from art shows, hiking, and ballet to a spattering of bars like Saddles. But it was still small enough that people formed bonds with each other quickly. The fact that some of the town’s citizens were unique by human standards was a bonus and put them more at ease. With other supernatural beings around, they were less likely to stick out and draw unwanted attention.

  She skimmed her tongue over her upper lip, dropping her gaze down then back up his body. “Ooh. Sounds like you’ve got what it takes to please. But then guys always think they do even when their dick isn’t any bigger than a Sharpie.”

  He laughed, enjoying her wit and humor. At least it was better than checking the IDs of the underage partiers who tried to get into the club. He wondered how she’d managed to get through the door and came up with the only possible conclusion. She had to have flirted with Luther, one of the other bouncers, and he’d stepped aside and let her pass.

  “That’s not the case with me. As they say, ‘Ain’t no brag. Just fact.’”

  Her eyes widened a moment before she regained her sultry expression. “Then prove it.” She hooked her fingers into the waistband of his jeans and started to unbutton them.

  He grabbed her hands, stopping her, and she slapped on a pout. “Look, babe. I’ve got a jo
b to do, and nothing”—his gaze dropped to her hands—“is going to stop me from doing that job. Come back when you’re twenty-one. Until then, you’re leaving. Either on your own steam or on mine.”

  She let out an exasperated bullshit and yanked her hands away. “Oh, come on. The other bouncer didn’t have a problem looking the other way.” She smirked. “Especially after I gave him a freebie. I could make you feel good, too. Good enough to want me around, ya know?”

  Now it made even more sense. She was one of those girls who would use her natural “talent” to get what she wanted. He gave her another look. She could be a hooker or just a party girl. It was getting harder to tell, and Luther letting her in for the price of a free blow job wasn’t surprising. The big lug would do almost anything—including letting a girl who was underage into the club—if he could get a little action. He’d had her pegged wrong, but finding out she was a hooker would make the problem even worse than her just being a girl looking for fun. Prostitutes brought the reputation of the club down, which wouldn’t make the owner, Rob Partlow, happy. And if Rob wasn’t happy, no one working for him was happy, either.

  “So what do you say? A little hand job, maybe?” She batted her fake eyelashes. “I’d be willing to let you fuck me. Pussy or ass, it’s your choice.”

  “No, thanks. I’d rather get my sex the old-fashioned way.”

  “That is the old-fashioned way. It’s not the oldest profession for nothing.”

  “Sorry, but no.”

  “Hey, a girl’s got to make a living. Besides, I heard the producers of a new television reality show were coming here tonight. Once they see me, they’ll put me on the show and make me famous. You’re going to wish you’d taken me up on my offer once I’m a big star. If you do, I might not make you beg for my autograph.”

  It wouldn’t have surprised him to see movie and television producers in the club or anywhere else in Passion. Although a small town, many rich and famous people came there to scout movie locations or to enjoy the unique flavor of the local artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Passion could claim every kind of citizen from the poorest starving artist to a few millionaires. Add all that to the Western feel of the town and Passion was irresistible to the entertainment-industry types.

  “From hooker to Hollywood, is that it?”

  She scoffed. “So? It’s getting harder and harder to make a living with all the skanks willing to give it away. Give a girl a break, why don’t ya?”

  “If it’s getting that rough, why not get a real job and audition on the side?”

  “And make minimum wage? Hell, no. I need the finer things in life.”

  Even if she has to get on her knees to earn them? Poor kid. “Then that’s your choice. But you’re leaving now.”

  She batted her eyes at him again. Did she really think that made her more appealing?

  “You’re not really going to toss me out, are you?”

  “The rules are the rules. I don’t make them. I just enforce them.” He took her by the arm with enough strength to hold her, but not enough to hurt her, then turned her toward the rear exit.

  “Think of this as me doing you a favor. I’m trying to keep you from getting yourself beat up or worse. You’re from out of town, I’ll bet, and tricking without the protection of your pimp. Have I got that right, too?”

  She scowled, causing the makeup on her forehead to form deep creases. “What business is it of yours?”

  She was right. It wasn’t any of his business. How often had his brothers DJ and Rick said the same thing? Yet he hated the idea of a young girl caught up in a world of pimps and johns. If he had enough time and money, he’d try to help as many of them as he could. He doubted his brothers could resist the urge to make a difference, too. They tried to give people a hand up whenever they could, including loaning money that was earmarked to buy a ranch. But how could they turn down a plea for help when, compared to others, they had it pretty good?

  “Does your mother know what you’re doing?”

  “My mama taught me everything I know about satisfying a man. Let me show you what I learned.”

  “Again, thanks, but I’ll pass. And you’re still leaving.”

  Her attitude adjusted, and not in a good way. “You shithead bouncer. You don’t know a good thing when it’s right in front of you.” The lanky blonde squirmed against his grip then finally settled down and let him take her outside.

  “Shit. At least take me out the front door.”

  He held her firmly yet made certain that he didn’t hurt her. “And let the real patrons of the club see you? No thanks. We like to keep up a certain standard.”

  “Fuck you, man.”

  Once in the alley, Brandon turned her loose and started to step back inside the club. The girl, however, had a different idea. She got rid of her scowl and returned to trying the sexy tactic.

  “Come on. Let me give you a little something to remember me by. Then when I’m famous you can say you fucked me.” She moaned and pressed against him. “Let me back inside, okay?”

  “Again. Thanks, but no thanks.” Snatching her up by the armpits, he carried her, kicking and hollering, over to the pile of trash bags waiting for disposal the next day. He plopped her down on top of the pile.

  “Shit! What do you think you’re doing? You’re going to get my new skirt dirty.”

  “I’m trying to give you a little of the good sense that your mama should’ve given you. Not that it’s all her fault. You must’ve gotten shortchanged on brains when you were born.”

  Night after night he saw the same damn thing. Pretty young girls who were willing to put themselves in a bad situation for a few dollars or a chance at fame. When he could no longer stand the thought of what might happen to them, he’d try to wake them up to the dangers they courted. The problem was that few of them listened.

  “Let go of me, asshole. You’re hurting me.”

  Like hell he was. He’d never hurt a female. He was hardly holding on to her, but she was into full drama mode and blowing every little pain out of proportion.

  “Do you remember the girl that was raped and killed last month?”

  She blinked. “No.” The flash of fear that had crossed her face was replaced by false bravado.

  “That’s my point. Nobody does. She was just one of the girls who thought she could make money giving it up to any guy willing to pay her a few bucks. Just as long as she made it big, it was all going to be worth it. I must’ve thrown her out a hundred times.”

  “So? What’s she got to do with me? Obviously, she didn’t have the It factor like I do.”

  “That’s what she would’ve said if you’d been the one to get killed.”

  She put on a good front, but he could see that he’d unnerved her. Good. The more frightened she is, the more sense might sink into her thick skull.

  “You’re sitting on the place where they found her body. Some creep raped her then beat her up and dumped her body on top of the trash bags. They had to use her dental records to ID her because her face was so cut up it didn’t look like her any longer. Hell, it didn’t even look like a face.”

  She stiffened, her gaze dropping to the sacks surrounding her. “You’re making this shit up and trying to scare me off. Well, it won’t work. I’m destined for fame, and all I’ve got to do is be in the right place at the right time.”

  “Check the Internet and read the report. According to the few friends she had, she sounded just like you. Hell, she even looked like you. Before the attack, of course. Her name was Brenda Matheson, and she got her five minutes of fame. Is that what you want? Five minutes and then you’re dead?”

  She frowned, the lines of her face again becoming more evident under the pound of makeup. “I thought it was fifteen minutes of fame.”

  “It is. But her time in the spotlight didn’t even last that long.”

  “Aw, man. Not again.”

  He pivoted toward his brother. Dayton Jason “DJ” Banning stood in the doorway, th
e light behind him putting his large body in silhouette.

  “Just trying to keep another one from getting skinned, bro.”

  He heard her quick inhale. “Oh, did I not make myself clear? Not only did the killer rape her and cut up her face, he also started to skin the hide right off her. He must’ve gotten spooked before he could get the second strip of skin pulled off her stomach.”

  Her eyes sparkled with unshed tears. Had he gone too far? That last part wasn’t true, but if it convinced her to reconsider her path to fame, then it was worth telling a lie.

  DJ snorted. “You’re handling one gal while I deal with the other five hookers working the bar. Man, we’ve got to talk with Luther without letting Rob get a whiff of what’s happening. If Luther keeps it up, he’ll turn Saddles into a whorehouse.”

  The girl pushed away from Brandon and slid off the pile of sacks. “This guy promised I could come back in if I gave it to him.” She pushed out her chest and thrust out her chin. “I could sue the bar for sexual assault. Unless, of course, you do as I say.”

  Brandon ran a hand over his face. Why did he keep trying to help these girls? They had a one-track mind leading to destruction. “I also promised her I’d give her a condo on the beach in Hawaii if she gave me a hand job. Right after the girl from Venus fucks me with her three vaginas.” He laughed and sauntered over to his brother. “I was just telling her what kind of trouble she could get into with a strange man. Especially with her legs spread wide.”

  “He’s right, girl, and he should know. He’s the strangest man of all.”

  He should’ve known DJ wouldn’t miss a chance to make a joke.
